Our summertime Girl’s Weekend began with the arrival at Stemmerman’s Inn, located in the Historic District of Wilmington, North Carolina, along the Atlantic Coast. With original construction dating back to 1886, the interior maintains the exposed brick and beams charm, while the architecture’s exterior is truly one of the area’s last standing Victorian facades. Enter the bright, red door of Stemmerman’s Inn on S. Front Street in Wilmington, Hollywood East, or “Wilmywood” as affectionately known by the locals, and you will be warmly greeted by Mira or JJ, the brother-sister duo owners of this historic inn.
Mira and JJ have successfully blended the Inn’s historic architecture with contemporary furnishings in all seven suites. Take a few steps down the hall which leads you onto the back deck for excellent views of the Cape Fear River, the battleship USS North Carolina, the paddlewheel excursion boat for sightseeing and dinner cruises aboard the Henrietta III, and some of the most magnificent sunsets on the East Coast. Music from local artists are a stone’s throw away.
Shop. Eat. Drink. There is an abundance of attractions and activities along Riverwalk, which is so close; virtually out the back door. Take a walk along Water Street to The Cotton Exchange where you will find great local artists’ galleries, unique shops, restaurants and more. Experience the grandeur and charm of historic Old Wilmington with one of many tours via horse-drawn carriage, trolley car, and my favorite, the paddlewheel boat. There’s even a Hollywood location walk and a Haunted Pub Crawl. At Barista Cafe’ and Cape Fear Bakery, breakfast is served all day. There’s free Wi-Fi, a full coffee and smoothie bar, and even a Bloody Mary bar. For lunch, you might like The Dixie Grill, where you can get a local home cooked meal for a great price. Possible celebrity-sightings can be found at Elijah’s, and the food and service can’t be beat. Salons, consignment shops, a serpentarium (for you snake lovers), night life and much more can all be found within walking distance. The Reel Cafe’ and Dock Street Oyster Bar are two of Wilmington’s favorite night time hot spots along Front Street that shouldn’t be missed. Thalian Hall boasts both comedy and theatre.
The Cape Fear Coast is one of the most beautiful natural seashores on the Atlantic Ocean. In the summertime, swim in the waves, get surf lessons, body board, and get sun-kissed. Charter boat fishing, golf courses and tennis courts are also available. Best of all, it’s a perfect place to meet or make new friends, have fun conversations, and sip a few cocktails.
