In July 2011, just three months prior to the rainstorm that devastated Cinque Terre, here I was, on my first visit to this wildly, breathtaking region of five (cinque) Italian Riviera villages. Before the flood, you could take in the spectacular views by walking between villages on the narrow, cliffside trails or if you’re short on time, by taking the train that stops at each destination. I spent the day shopping the quaint local shops, having pizza with my traveling companions at the cafe’, sipping cool beverages, and taking a swim.
What a tragedy this idyllic region was destroyed by Mother Nature’s flood. Today, this small community continues to rebuild little by little. Below is the story of that fateful day and how they are rebuilding.
